Song #30 TOSB: Come on, Ring Those Bells

Ev’ry-body likes to take a holiday, Ev’ry-body likes to take a rest
Spending time together with the family, sharing lots of love and happiness.

Refrain:   Come on, ring those bells, light the Christmas tree,
                Jesus is the King born for you and me.
                Come on, ring those bells, ev’ry-body say,
                “Jesus, we remember this your birthday.”

Celebrations come because of something good, celebrations we love to recall.
Mary had a baby boy in Bethlehem, the greatest celebration of them all.

Refrain:    Come on, ring those bells, light the Christmas tree,
                 Jesus is the King born for you and me.
                 Come on, ring those bells, ev’ry-body say,
                 “Jesus, we remember this your birthday.”

Scripture Reading: Luke 2:1-20 (KJV)

And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed.

(And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)  And all went to be taxed, everyone into is own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, unto the city of David, which is Bethlehem; (Because he was of the house and lineage of David)  To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, 1 being great with child.
And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she be delivered.  And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room in the inn.

And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.  And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.  And the angel said to them, “Fear not: for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.  For unto you if born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.  And this shall be a sign unto you: Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.”
And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them unto heaven, the shepherds said one to another, “Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known to us.  And they came with haste, and found Mary and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manager.  And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.  And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.  But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.  And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.

P:         This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C:        Praise to You, O Christ.

HYMN #370 What Child Is This?

1.  What child is this, who, laid to rest, on Mary’s lap is sleeping?
     Whom angels greet with anthems sweet While shepherds watch are keeping?
     This, this is Christ the king, Whom shepherds guard and angels sing:
     Haste, haste to bring Him laud, the babe, the son of Mary!

2.  Why lies He in such mean estate where ox and ass are feeding?
     Good Christian, fear; for sinners here The silent Word is pleading.
     Nails, spear shall pierce Him through, The cross be borne for me, for you;
     Hail, hail the Word made flesh, The babe, the son of Mary!

3.   So bring Him incense, gold, and myrrh; Come peasant, king, to own Him.
      The King of kings salvation brings; Let loving hearts enthrone Him.
      Raise, raise the song on high, The virgin sings her lullaby;
      Joy, joy, for Christ is born, The babe, the son of Mary!

Prayers

Let us pray for the people of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs.

Brief silence

Lord God Almighty, we come before You on this most holy night in awe at the wonder and majesty of the incarnation. The Savior of the nations has come, and with joy we greet our newborn King. Let the proclamation of His birth sound forth throughout the world. Give to Your Church faithful pastors to proclaim the good tidings of His birth, and give to Your people willing ears to hear and believe.

In the birth of Your Son, You have signaled the beginning of a new creation; while we still live in a world wracked by the ravages of sin, we know that the final victory is Yours. Watch over and keep safe emergency workers and all whose vocations keep them from their families this evening for the well-being of our families.

In the birth of Your Son, You have visited and redeemed Your people. Continue to visit those who are lonely, sick, recovering or near death. Let Your presence be a comfort to them, and give them perseverance until that time You grant healing, relief, deliverance and peace.

In the birth of Your Son, and by His death and resurrection, You have reconciled the world to Yourself. Keep us ever mindful that Jesus is for all people, and give us opportunity to tell others the good news of His coming so that they can join in the praise of Your holy name.

In the birth of Your eternal Son, who is of one substance with You, You visited mankind, and so Your eternal Godhead is bound to the body and blood He gives us in the Sacrament of the Altar. Grant faith to all who receive this gift, that with sins forgiven and love strengthened they can serve their neighbor in joy.

In the birth of Your Son, You have called people of all times and places into the Body of Christ that is the Church. We give You thanks for all the believers who have gone before us, especially those who have been with us during Christmases past and are now with You. Give us a sure confidence in Your promise of resurrection and eternal life, and bring us at last together with them into Your presence at the full coming of Your kingdom.

Into Your hands, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Lord’s Prayer
            Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name,
            Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven;
            give us this day our daily bread;
            and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us;
            and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
            For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever.AMEN.

OFFERING

C: We give Thee but Thine own, What-e’er the gift may be;
     All that we have is Thine alone, A trust, O Lord. From Thee.

HYMN #364 Away in a Manger
1.  Away in a manger, no crib for a bed,
     The little Lord Jesus laid down His sweet head.
     The stars in the sky looked down where He lay,
     The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay.

2.  The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes,
     But little Lord Jesus, no crying He makes.
     I love Thee, Lord Jesus! Look down from the sky,
     And stay by my cradle till morning is nigh.

3.  Be near me, Lord Jesus; I ask Thee to stay
     Close by me forever and love me, I pray.

     Bless all the dear children in Thy tender care,
     And take us to heaven to live with Thee there.

 A Reading from Isaiah 9:2-7

The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwell in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shined.  You have multiplied the nation; you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as they are glad when they divide the spoil.  For the yoke of his burden and the staff for his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian.  For every boot of the tramping warrior in battle tumult and every garment rolled in blood will be burned as fuel for the fire.  For unto us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.  Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.

Hymn #363 Silent Night

Silent night, holy night! All is calm, all is bright
Round yon virgin mother and child Holy Infant so tender and mild,
Sleep in heavenly peace, Sleep in heavenly peace.

Silent night, holy night! Shepherds quake at the sight;
Glories stream from heaven afar, Heav’nly hosts sing. Alleluia!
Christ, the Savior, is born! Christ, the Savior, is born!

Silent night, holy night! Son of god, love’s pure light
Radiant beams from Thy holy face With the dawn of redeeming grace,
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth, Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth.

BLESSING

P:         Now may the love of God the Father who calls us His children and therefore, that is what we are;
            The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ who willingly was born a human child that he might be the sacrifice to redeem us                from sin;

            And the communion of the Holy Spirit who calls, gathers, and enlightens members of God’s family – our wonderful                Triune God – bless you and keep you firmly in faith even unto eternity.

C:        Amen

Closing Hymn  - #387 v1, 4 – Joy to the World

            Joy to the world, the Lord is come! Let earth receive her King;
            Let ev’ry heart prepare Him room And heav’n and nature sing,
            And heav’n and nature sing, And heav’n and heav’n and nature sing.

            He rules the world with truth and grace And makes the nations prove
            The glories of His righteousness And wonders of His love,
            And wonders of His love, And wonders, wonders of His love.
